Dominant Trivia Force [DTM] June 26, 2007

Once again Delivery Boys proved to be a dominant trivia force. I am almost certain that the words “dominant trivia force” have never appeared together without punctuation… I’m going to google it now to see if anything comes up… Please hold.
Ha! No results! Congratulations Delivery Boys: A few days from now, whenever anyone in the world googles “Dominant trivia force”, your team name will be displayed as the only result. And I’m sure people have been trying to identify a DTF for years now.
Honorable mention: You Look Tasty & The Golden Nematodes.
Hah! I told you so! June 19, 2007

So last night we had the following question in round 3:
The international system (SI) of units defines seven SI base (or fundamental) units. Name them.
I thought the question was pretty straight forward but when people heard the correct answers, several trivia-goers cried about it. There is NO crying in Trivia! It says so right on your answer sheet! The answers are: Meter, Second, Ampere, Mole, Kg, Candela, degree Kelvin.
I had people claim that there was no way that a mole was a unit…people that claimed the Kg is a modified unit and other that it’s a derivative unit. The final straw was then someone implied that I get all my answers from and do all my research on, Wikipedia (Wikipedia!!). Well, I don’t. I will be the first to admit that I screw up sometimes… In a way, it’s a good thing because it proves, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that I am NOT the Pope. Kidding aside, I definitely make mistakes and will continue to do so, but I try to keep incorrect information to a minimum. So feel free to tell me that you think I’m wrong but don’t accuse me of relying on Wikipedia…I know that a large percentage of its “knowledge” is…truthy at best.
Having said that, here are a few sources which back me up on the 7 fundamental SI units:
National Institute of Standards and Technology
Prof. Russ Rowlett at University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill
eFunda – Engineering Fundamentals
I bet Wiki would back me up too…but you can find that on your own. Ok, I’m done proving myself now.
The winners last night were from a team called Delivery Boys and they’re no strangers to Trivia Nite at John Harvard’s. This win gives them sole possession of 1st place on the All-Time Leader board. Congrats!
Whiskey Remark Wins! June 5, 2007

It was a battle all night… There were many changes in lead but Whiskey remark managed to come out on top and take home the John Harvard’s Trivia Trophy of Awesomeness. Congrats! Bone Saw and Beers for Marc rounded out the top three.
Best of all, the microphones are fixed! It’s tough to have a trivia night without microphones. On a different note, I have made a promise to one team that from now on, the super bonus question will never have anything to do with English Monarchs! So you can all rest easy. I will warn you however that on Monday, July 2nd, you should be prepared for lots of Independence Day trivia!
Clutterbuck. May 29, 2007

So last night was marred by… no wait, completely and irreparably destroyed by the fact that the John Harvard’s microphone died after Round 2. I wasn’t quite sure what the best course of action was at that point. I knew that trying to yell to everyone would never work…so hopefully my hand-written quizzes sufficed. I am buying 2 new microphones tonight so it won’t happen again.
Despite the clutterbuck, Human Knot managed to take home the win and the Jim Farnsworth Love Cup… which they will get to rename next week. Thanks for bearing with me!
Systematic Victory! May 22, 2007

It’s good to be back. Last night was full of lead changes, trophy-ogling, and cute Australians… how could those factors NOT combine to make for a good night? A team called Systematic Chaos took first place and the rights to the “Jim Farnsworth Love Cup” formerly known as the the John Harvard’s Trivia Trophy of Awesomeness.
Motorcycles Are Everywhere took second… (the name is, no doubt, a reference to the fact that I just got my motorcycle license) And the Bjjj’s took third. I have no idea what that team name is about but I think I would like to find out.

Last night a team calling themselves “Steamboat Willie Nelson Mandela Reese Wihterspoon Tang Dynasty” won the night. Sometimes I get the feeling that teams like to find out how long a name, or how profane a name they can get me to say. You’ll be trying for a long time….
Breaking news from last night:
-There is now a trophy for 1st place teams. It’s big. Each week, the winning team from the previous week will be able to display the trophy on their table so that everyone else in the pub knows how awesome they are. If the winning team does not show up the following week, the trophy will go to the 2nd or 3rd place team. Help me think of a name for the trophy…
-This coming week, Greg will be filling in for me because I’ll be in Colorado. Play nice.

Last night Tenet Advocacy Project knocked off Remote Location in a very close game. Going into the final round, RL held the lead by a single point. At the end of the night however, TAP managed to top RL…also by a one point margin. Congrats!
Note to TAP: If you guys use the same name every week, I can keep track of your cumulative points… But you don’t care about that, nevermind.
9pm Rocks! April 17, 2007

The new start time seemed to have a positive effect on the night. From my vantage point, there were more teams and everyone seemed more awake and less cranky. Not that any of you ever seem cranky… but sometimes, some of you seem cranky. It’s Ok! It happens to me too when I’m tired.
As an added bonus, I have enough time after trivia now to stick around for a beer or two and socialize..something I can’t do very effectively when I’m trying to add trivia scores (I was an English Major). I am a fan of the 9pm start time.
So are Cheriyots of Fire, the 1st place team. They did battle all night long with Dominant Jeans and ended up coming out on top, 230 – 223. Dominant Jeans was favored until they claimed that someone named “Arroyo” was a Costa Rican Astronaut. Yeeeehh…..10 points were subtracted from their score for that one.
Congrats again to all our Marathoners! See everyone on Monday!
“The Beer Hunter” Cans the Competition… April 10, 2007

Last night we saw 19 teams participate which closer to the average than we’ve seen in past weeks. Spring break must be over by now and people are crawling back… They always come crawling back. A team called The Beer Hunter won by a healthy margin last night; congratulations.
Team Stumbles Drunkenly to Victory…. April 3, 2007

What was the key to success for the team calling themselves “I like A-rod because he sucks for the Yankees”? Well one team member said, “The more I drink, the better I do.”
There you have it. More beer = better score = winning more free beer. This was the last week of spring break so I expect a lot more teams next week. A special thanks to OSU and Florida about last night…. Thanks for totally F__ING my bracket!
