New Sound Equipment!? November 4, 2007

Yes it’s true. I will be testing out some new sound equipment tomorrow night. I am not promising that it will be a permanent change but it’s a possibility. I expect it to be much better for a number of reasons but I would appreciate feedback from you guys. Can you hear me better? (Louder, clearer?) Can you hear the music better? Not only are the speakers newer and more powerful but I got some stand which might mean that instead of the audio blasting in your faces it will…well..not blast you in the face and reach people farther away from my table aka “The Corner of the Trivia Universe”. You didn’t know that universes had corners did you?
Let me know.

Just got the word from John Harvard’s. There will be no change in the day or time of trivia night. I don’t think there will even be a game because the Sox will sweep the Angels. Even if there is a game…well…John Harvard’s has TV’s! See you Monday!!!
For those who groan about geography questions… September 4, 2007

From Global Politician :
Americans treat geography as a spelling bee–trivia to be memorized and repeated on demand with no analytical power. The key question of Why are things where they are? remains unasked. Knowing geographical facts such as that the Himalayas and Andes are the highest mountain chains in the world contributes no understanding of plate tectonics and the resultant effects on climate, and the impact on human settlement for the people who live on opposite sides of these great mountains. The reluctance to incorporate and classify many facts into relevant explanatory factors contributes to the naive and wholly wrong idea that geography cannot be a science because it deals only with “unique” places.
There is, however, another level of geographic knowledge which is particularly rewarding but seldom communicated to the average pupil–places are not only different, they are similar: It is not by chance that the coasts of Norway and Chile in opposite hemispheres but similar latitudes resemble each other with deep fjords and beautiful glaciers, or that rent, property value and intensity of land use decline from the city center towards the periphery all over the world.
Nothing can be understood apart from the place where it occurs. No event, situation, problem in nature or human history has much meaning until it is examined against its geographical background. Geography studies the location, extent, distribution, frequency and interaction of all significant elements of the human and physical environment on the earth’s surface.
Geography is important! Don’t end up like Miss Teen South Carolina!
World’s Tallest Building August 21, 2007

Is in Dubai. It’s a building (albeit unfinished) and it’s tall.
I did, however, just read today that Japan has plans for an even taller building called the X-Seed 4000. Which seems like a good idea given all the earthquake, terrorists, and giant radioactive lizard dragon things in Japan.

Last night a team calling themselves “Steamboat Willie Nelson Mandela Reese Wihterspoon Tang Dynasty” won the night. Sometimes I get the feeling that teams like to find out how long a name, or how profane a name they can get me to say. You’ll be trying for a long time….
Breaking news from last night:
-There is now a trophy for 1st place teams. It’s big. Each week, the winning team from the previous week will be able to display the trophy on their table so that everyone else in the pub knows how awesome they are. If the winning team does not show up the following week, the trophy will go to the 2nd or 3rd place team. Help me think of a name for the trophy…
-This coming week, Greg will be filling in for me because I’ll be in Colorado. Play nice.

Announcement!! April 10, 2007

There is an important announcement: Trivia now starts at 9pm instead of 9:30pm. So arrive earlier…. I would expect it to be a bit more difficult to get a table because some people will still be eating dinner… But hey, we’ll be done by 11pm now.
Also, I took down the “submit a question” section of the website… Not because I didn’t like your questions (I did) but because the more people submit, the more I realized that it gives the submitter’s team too great an advantage. But I would encourage you to submit song requests. Sooo…. See you Monday before 9pm!
Larry David Sandwich wins! March 27, 2007

On a particularly quiet night, Larry David Sandwich took first place and Fun Scotty Doesn’t Know the Ocho slid into second. All night I was pretty disappointed with the turnout (14 teams) but then I remembered that it’s Spring Break for a lot of people… So that’s cool. Ahhh Spring Break…I remember that.

The 33rd Annual General Meeting of the International Standard Book Number panel took place…where?
Slow week this week. I went to Redbones on Sunday and ordered the BBQ Belt. Anyone ever tried that? It’s F-ing HUGE! I just finished it today for lunch. Anyways, that is not relevant to trivia at all, I’m just still amazed. Don’t forget to write your answer to the Web Bonus during the first round tonight for 5 points!
House of Pain Wins! March 6, 2007

There were some difficult questions last night but the team called “House of Pain” came up with the answer round after round. The team proved that they were more familiar with the Burning Man festival and Ron Jeremy’s penis than the competition.
2nd and 3rd place teams were “Last Night I Rode the Bison, If You Know What I Mean” and “Jolly Good Fellows. So these three teams will earn points towards the cumulative score for this week.
Next week’s quiz will feature questions relative to St. Patty’s Day… So be ready!
