In the movie “Closer”, Jude Law’s character says at the beginning of the movie that he is an obituary writer in London. He says that he uses the word “convivial” as a euphemism for what?
The Final Show January 27, 2008

I’ve been running a trivia night (the trivia night) in Cambridge for the past few years, as most of you know. Recently, for unclear reasons, the management at John Harvard’s has decided to discontinue Trivia Night. Despite my best efforts to relocate to another venue, I have not met with success. Tomorrow night will be the last Trivia Night at John Harvard’s for the foreseeable future, and possibly ever… Certainly the last time I will be hosting a trivia night in the Cambridge area. It’s a very sad thing for me.
I’d like to invite everyone to come out on the final night for some trivia (9pm – 11pm) and post-trivia beers if you feel so inclined. Post-trivia beers will occur most likely at Charlie’s Kitchen down the street. Thanks, hope to see many of you.
Cheers,
Dan

Which team was utterly embarrassed by the Patriots yesterday in the AFC championship? Hint: They are from San Diego…a city that hasn’t won anything in…I don’t know how many years.
Sports Bars! January 16, 2008

Someone asked me what sports bar I would recommend….It sort of depends on what’s important to you. I will list some spots I enjoy with pros and cons.
Boston Beerworks – Kenmore Sq.
Sub-par beer, mediocre food, usually a fun crowd though.
Cornwall’s – Kenmore Sq.
Not technically a sports bar but they do have 2 large plasmas at the bar and one in the back. Outstanding beer menu, sub-par food. They do have darts, pooltable and…Board Games! I like this spot for pre or post sox games, darts and scrabble. Rarely crowded.
Fritz’s Sports Bar – South Boston
“Boston’s Gay Sports Bar”, Fun and friendly place.
Cask ‘ Flagon – Kenmore Sq.
Ever since they renovated, it feels too “trendy” but the sheer number of TV’s is great. Food and Beer = average.
Game On – Kenmore Sq.
Same review as above.
The Sports Depot – Allston
Awesome number and quality of TV’s. Crowd is questionable, food and beer = average.
Spirit Bar – Porter Sq.
Small, decent beer & food.
Charlies Kitchen
Again not a sports bar, but I love 3.00 Narragansetts and many of their other higher quality beers. Also, the double cheeseburger for $4.95 is hard to beat.
The Stadium – South Boston
Have not been here but I have heard great things. Just a little too much out of the way for me.
Champions Sports Bar – Downtown
Larger, inside a hotel… Haven’t been in a while.
Thirsty Scholar – Somerville
Not a bad spot for a game… everything is average.
So there you go. It sort of depends on what’s important to you… A crowd? Beer selection? Abundance of TV’s?

Someone last night was talking to me about a different venue…You took my contact info. Who are you? Get in touch…
To everyone in general, thanks for the support. If JH “stays the course” and kills Trivia Night, an alternate plan (still in Harvard Square) is in the works and might work out. I will keep you posted.
Very Bad News January 14, 2008

I received an email this week from the General Manager of John Harvard’s. It seems that he doesn’t think John Harvard’s should have a Trivia Night anymore and so he has told me that January 28th, 2008 will be the last Trivia Night ever.
I, naturally, disagree with him. Trivia night is as well attended as it has ever been. I see many of the same faces week after week which means that it must be somewhat fun. I’ve told him that it’s a mistake but he isn’t budging. I take issue with this, particularly, because he has never even seen a trivia night. He leaves the restaurant long before I arrive, long before you arrive. After doing Trivia Night for the past 3 or so years, this news is very sad.
So, I’m not sure what can be done. I have a lot of fun every week and if I knew of a way to keep Trivia Night at John Harvard’s I would. I’ll keep thinking about it. In the mean time, I’m trying to look forward to a good last 3 weeks. Everyone should be sure to show up for the last night…
This week’s web bonus: Learn these unrelated two facts:
1. John Harvard’s has decided to cancel Trivia Night
2. The email address for the JH managers can be found here: http://www.johnharvards.com/locations.htm#ma
In the web bonus space tonight, write down the email addresses and names of everyone on your team so I can put together an email list in the event that I can find another venue or something.
boo.

After a long and forced hiatus, trivia night will return to John Harvard’s tonight. I hope that my questions in 2008 will cause you even more mental anguish than they did in 2007!
